The Greater Bluffton Republican Club held a meeting on last month at Bluffton BBQ. Author Marvin Rogers, was the special guest speaker. "How could the Party of abolition - the Party of Abraham Lincoln - become the Party of scorn in the eyes of the vast majority of African Americans? How did the Republican Party lose its black soul?" he asked the packed room of wide-eyed, captivated, margarita-sipping listeners. SILENCE MAKES THE LOUDEST SOUND is the title of his book and silence embraced the quaint eatery as Mr. Rogers spoke about his life, his upbringing in a predominantly African-American neighborhood, his family, his freestyle rap, his work as a Spanish speaking missionary in Mexico and Nicaragua, his job with Congressman Bob Inglis, his political career and how he came to identify with the Republican Party at a very young age. Afterwards, he answered questions.
One young African American in the audience thanked Mr. Rogers for explaining things in logical manner. He admitted to voting for President Obama because of his race and both laughed as Mr. Rogers asked him if he was experiencing "buyer's remorse." President Obama could not have won with the African-American vote alone. Americans and most especially Republicans are beyond ready for more conservative African-American representation and do not stand in silence if anyone else attempts to tell you otherwise. Tell them respectfully and graciously that we do not care about the color of one's skin, and if their philosophy calls for limited government and more personal responsibility take another look at the Republican Party. If you want to know the answer to the burning question above, read Marvin Rogers' book about a conversation between African Americans and the Republican Party. |
