Political Challenge Dinner -- Thursday, April 17th

Every two years the Beaufort Area Republican Club (BARC), in accordance with its by-laws, holds a general dinner meeting for the election of officers for the next two years. This event is scheduled for Thursday, April 17th. Our Nominating Committee Chairman, past president Bob Rose, will announce the slate of new officers, and an election will be held.
We always try to arrange an informative and entertaining program for our members, as well as a good dinner at a reasonable price. And, this year, we make no exception. We have invited Buddy Witherspoon who is challenging for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Lindsey Graham. Senator Graham has advised us that he will not be able to attend but will send volunteers to pass out his literature and talk with our members..
Steve Brown Catering is providing our meal which features carved top round of beef, shoepeg corn, mashed potatoes and gravy, fresh fruit salad, herb rolls and pecan pie. Coffee, tea and water are included, and there will be a selection of adult beverages provided by BARC. We will even have a “carver” so that you receive just the right amount of beef, cut just as you like it.
In addition to the election of our new officers, we have invited and will recognize the local candidates and give them an opportunity to address our members. We will also provide them with a table to display their campaign materials. You will be able to interact with them and hear why you should vote for them in the upcoming Republican Primary on June 10th.
Our event will be held in the parish  hall of St. Peter’s Church on Lady’s Island. A reception begins at 6:00 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:45 p.m. and our program at 7:30 p.m.  We will adjourn by 8:30 p.m. The  cost is $22 per person.
As you know, BARC’s stated purpose is to cultivate an informed membership through interactive discussion of the political processes, to increase the effectiveness of its members in the cause of good government by encouraging full participation in the political processes, and to promote the Republican Party’s philosophy and principles. We hope that you will join us for what promises to be a very informative and interesting evening.

GOP Members Have a Grand Old Party
The Beaufort Area Republican Club really did have a grand old party at its Fourth Annual Bert Hines Oyster Roast on Sunday, March 2nd.
We returned to the site where it all started -- the Sheriff’s Camp on Lady’s Island. Sheriff P. J. Tanner took time from his busy schedule to bring us up to date on the history of the Camp and how it has served, over the years, as a place where the Sheriff’s department can take a break and relax from the tense arena of law enforcement. The deputies have made a number of improvements, including adding a building and a very impressive dock on Chowan Creek. We are grateful  to Sheriff Tanner for the use of the facility, for his comments and for his service as our Sheriff.
Other local candidates in attendance included Ed Allen and Dr. Julian Mason, candidates for Coroner; Elizabeth Smith, incumbent Clerk of Courts; Jim Bequette, School Board Member; and Brian Flewelling, candidate for Skeet Von Harten’s seat on County Council. We look forward to seeing them, along with many more, at our Annual Meeting on  April 17th.
Mark McBride, former Mayor of Myrtle Beach, drove down with his wife and children to attend our event and announce that he will run against incumbent U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham. McBride’s comments seemed to gain some interest from a good many of the attendees.
Dino Teppara, Chief of Staff in Washington, D.C. for our Congressman Joe Wilson, stood in for Wilson who was overseas for his ninth trip to Iraq and Afghanistan. Wilson’s second son to serve in the War returned home on Easter. His oldest son was previously in Iraq. The common belief that politicians’ children don’t serve their country is certainly not true of our Congressman’s family. We at BARC appreciate both Wilson and his sons’ service to our country.
Catherine Ceips, our South Carolina State Senator, surprised everyone by honoring  Greg and Betty Shorey who traveled to Beaufort for this event from their new residence in Greenville, SC.  Among many other accomplishments, Greg was the first State Chairman of what is now known as the
South Carolina Republican Party, and he also introduced Senator Barry Goldwater as candidate for President of the United States at the Republican National Convention in 1964. But, most importantly, exactly 64 years ago to the day, he and Betty were married. We had a wonderful celebration of this very special event and enjoyed a delicious cake provided by Deanna Conners.
Our members also enjoyed fantastic Lowcountry oysters, seafood chowder, fried chicken, coleslaw, cornbread and a wide variety of beverages. The weather was perfect, with a gentle breeze to keep the bugs away, and the setting magnificent. We hope that this event will continue to grow and grow every year.
